BidVest Wits suffered a 1-0 loss to Al Ahly in their Caf Champions League first-round tie at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Saturday.
It was a tight opening to the contest although the hosts thought they had taken the lead in the 20th minute but it was chalked off for an infringement.
In the 31st minute Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs had to be sharp to palm away a cross.
After the break, Al Ahly threatened again when Amr Gamal hit the woodwork from a strike. Yet, the Red Devils would hit the front in the 56th minute when Ahmed Hegazi headed home from a corner.
The Clever Boys were relying on efforts from range but didn't really look like scoring, and in the 66th minute Josephs produced another good save to make sure Al Ahly did not double their lead.
Despite applying some pressure in the final stages of the game, Gavin Hunt's side were unable to really carve out any openings and it ended 1-0 to the Egyptian giants.
