Romelu Lukaku has reaffirmed his decision to turn down a lucrative new contract at Everton and insists there was 'nothing wrong' with his comments about ambition.
The Belgium striker stunned Goodison Park chiefs last week when he told them that he would not be signing a deal worth more than £100,000-a-week following a training session at the club's USM Finch Farm base.
Talks had been ongoing since last summer, with Lukaku's agent, Mino Raiola, claiming that negotiations were '99.9 per cent' complete.
After informing the club of his decision, Lukaku questioned Everton's ambitions and spoke about his desire to win trophies and play in the Champions League.
The 23-year-old is now on international duty with Belgium, who face Greece in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday before a friendly with Russia next Tuesday.
However, it was Lukaku's future on Merseyside which dominated a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, with Chelsea and Manchester United both weighing up moves for the striker this summer.
'The decision has already been made so I can't talk about that,' said Lukaku when asked about his contract situation.
'There is nothing wrong with ambition. You have to embrace it and where you are as a footballer.
'I've made a long way until now but the road is still long and I know I have to improve and get better. I want to help Everton as much as I can, as well as the national team. I think a lot of stuff can be achieved.'
Everton remain hopeful that Lukaku will put pen to paper on a new deal, despite the former Chelsea forward commenting on the club's transfer business and asking questions about the speed of progress since the arrival of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.
'Sometimes people will mistake things that I say but it's just ambition that I have; I want to win titles and trophies and I don't think people should take that as arrogance - people should embrace it,' Lukaku added.
'This is what footballers need to achieve if they want to become the best, and I think young kids need to learn that too.'
