Dar es Salaam. Azam FC kick off their Caf Confederation Cup campaign with a match against Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland at the Azam Complex this evening.
The Chamazi outfit, who received a bye to the first round, face the Swallows who defied all odds to oust Orapa United of Botswana on a 4-2 goal aggregate.
Azam may be heading into the match as the favourites considering that they will be playing at home.
However, it is a difficult match to predict for the two teams have never met in any competition.
Azam have been in impressive from since the turn of the year, thus they would draw inspiration from their recent matches to take a big first round advantage to the Swaziland capital of Mbabane.
Azam sit third in the Tanzanian Premier League with 44 points from 24 matches while their opponents top their league with 48 points garnered from 16 outings.
This proves that the match will be tough for both sides.
Azam information officer Jaffary Iddi said yesterday that their team was in top morale, exuding confidence that they will win the first leg tie.
“Our players are in high spirit ahead of the match. They have trained well for this match, so hopefully we will have the last laugh come Sunday,” said the outspoken official.
Azam captain John Bocco was equally confident, saying they will be all out record a comprehensive victory. “Everyone here is excited about the match. We want to seize our home advantage to post a big win because we know that Mbabane Swallows will be more aggressive during the second leg. We will therefore ensure that we score many goals and avoid conceding,” said the longest serving Azam striker.
The match will be handled by officials from Benin namely Adissa Abdul Raphiou Ligali who is the centre referee. He will be assisted by Medegnonwa Romains Agbodjogbe and Babadjide Bienvenu Dina.
The winner over two legs will qualify for playoffs where the first round winners will meet the first round losers of the African Champions League for a place in the group stage.
